Michigan Stadium is the biggest college football stadium in the entire country. This stadium holds over 100,000 people (20 Biggest American Football Stadiums).  Gillette Stadium only holds 68,000 people (NFL venue info). This picture shows how big the fan base is for some of the top colleges for sports. You can tell by the picture that many people are wearing the Michigan State shirts. The college must make a fortune on just merchandise alone.
Description: Heisman Trophy For Reggie Bush Still Up In Air

Reggie Bush was awarded the Heisman trophy after his 2005 season at USC. He was the first player to have this award be stripped away. While he was playing the NCAA found out that Reggie had accepted 300,000 dollars’ worth of gifts (A simple solution to NCAA corruption). If giving the trophy back wasn’t bad enough for him, he also would not be allowed to play his senior year. I don’t think that this is fair because the NCAA took back the only thing they give to players. Regardless if he accepted money he was still considered the best player in 2005.

Description: http://download.gamezone.com/uploads/image/data/1099455/Robert-Griffin-NCAA-Football-13-Cover.jpg

The video game company EA sports develop new NCAA video games every year.  The games they make for NCAA are football and basketball. The player on the cover is Robert Griffin who is the quarterback at BU. Even though he is on the cover he won’t receive any compensation for it what so ever. Even though he can chose to not be on the cover it still makes no sense that he doesn’t get paid for it.
Description: http://www.howiteasy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Worst-Sports-Injuries-17.jpg

In just the first week of the 2011 NCAA football season there were over 150 injuries (NCAA injury report). Many of these injuries are bad enough where the athlete wouldn’t be able to keep playing that season. There’s no reason an athlete should risk injury or even death without any form of pay if they can go pro if they are good enough. This is why most players who are talented enough skip their last two years of college and go straight to the pros.

Description: http://coachjaida.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/nick-saban.jpg

Nick Saban is the head coach at The University of Alabama. Not only is he the highest paid NCAA coach but also the 4th highest paid coach at any level including professional. Nick Saban makes over 6 million dollars annually (The Highest-Paid College Football Coaches). Everyone associated with the NCAA is being paid for their work except the players. The good thing that the NCAA is doing is providing the best coaches and staff for the players preparing them for professionals.
Description: Post-Season TV Ad Revenues by Sport [976]

This is a picture comparing the revenues of the NCAA men’s basketball and baseball, football and basketball. These are the three highest paid professional sports. As you can see NCAA men’s basketball makes almost $100 million more than baseball, football and basketball. So why is it that NCAA men’s basketball players have a combined salary of less then just 1 professional athlete in any other sport? This is because somehow the NCAA believes that when players are making money it changes the game.

Dear portfolio reader,

Before taking English 101, I would consider myself a poor writer. Even though in high school I never did badly in my English classes I always had hard time writing. Instead of brainstorming and organizing my ideas I would just start writing. Many times I would move on to the next paragraph before I even finished the one I was working on. When the semester started and I was English 101 I wasn’t confident in my writing. I knew this English class was going to be different. I was determined to improve my writing skills.
During the semester various essays were assigned to build writing skills. The essay that I enjoyed writing most was the ethnography. This assignment was to write about a group by observing them in their “natural habitat”.

Ethnography

Ethnography

The subculture I chose was the Raynham Giants football team. The reason I chose this was because last year my high school required us to do community service. I decided that I wanted to help out with my old football team. I new this would be a good choice because I was very curious about how the players acted during game day. I expected it to be the same as when I played but it’s but I knew it was completely different watching it then actually playing.
Today is game day as Raynham Giants take on their rival the Hull Pirates. The winner of this playoff game will advance to the super bowl.  I arrive at Ryan Bettencourt Memorial Field an hour and a half before the game starts and still have trouble finding a parking spot. It seems like more people are going games then when I played. Walking towards the field all I can smell hotdogs, hamburgers, and fries. Everyone including myself is wearing some kind of Raynham Giants clothing to support their team. There is a two story concrete building with a window facing the field. They use this building to hold equipment, play music and commentate the game. There are two police officers and one paramedic sitting right next to it. On both sides of this concrete structure there are two sets of metal bleachers. These bleachers were much better quality then on the other side of the field. Only the fans of the home team get to sit on the nice metal bleachers. On the other side of the field are the less quality wooden bleachers where the fans of the away team sit. The grass on the field didn’t look as green as it usually does. This was because the old practice field was turned into a new baseball field. This forced all three of the Giants team to practice on the game field. There were a few good sized patches of dirt in the middle of field. The good looking part of the field was the perfectly done lines. The last of the field that I see is the Ryan Bettencourt memorial. This is a 10 by 10 foot fenced in garden with a beautiful memorial stone for Ryan.
I arrived a little bit too early and notice that the teams haven’t really organized themselves yet. All the players are doing their own thing like getting food, playing on the playground, or socializing. It’s an hour before the game and both teams have finally gotten together with their other teammates. The players are wearing their thigh pads, cleats, and their jerseys. I didn’t understand why they did this because without the jerseys on their shoulder pads there were no way of telling whose shoulder pads and helmets were whose. It was like they wanted to mix up their pads to because they all kept them next to one another’s. Both teams were goofing around and just having fun. Thirty five minutes until game time and it was time for the team to start warming up. The coach blew his whistle and all the players started looked for the pads. The coach had them start with a slow lap around the field and then start stretching. They formed 5 lines of about 10 people in each line. The 5 people in the front of the lines were the captains. Stretching lasted 15 minutes and next they individually went over to Ryan’s memorial and took a knee. 20 minutes until game time, the team seemed nervous but focused. No one talked or smiled until 5 minutes before the game when the coach did his game day speech that was so enthusiastic and inspirational that it made me pumped up. It seemed like that nervous butterfly feeling was replaced by motivation. Next both teams line up at each end zone and sit silently for about 30 seconds before the announcers introduced the pirates. They played “Remember the name” by fort minor as the Pirates ran from their end zone to their sideline. Next the announcer introduced the home team and played “Can’t be touched” by Roy Jones Jr. as the Giants ran to their sideline. You could feel the energy of both teams as they are chanting there team names.

With every good play came energetic cheers and clapping and every bad call came angry booing. At half time the Giants were down 21 to 7. They walked slowly with their heads down toward their end zone. Team confidence was low and it was up to the coach to boost it back up. Instead of coach giving an inspirational speech it was the team captain who was the starting quarterback. I didn’t get to hear what he had to say because the coaches didn’t allow anyone near the team but I could tell he did a good job when everyone stood up and started cheering.

Thirty-six seconds left in the game and the Giants are down 28 to 24 when the coach quickly calls a time out. They were on the Pirates ten yard line on 3rd down. They do a pass play that gets knocked down and leaves them with ten yards to go with only one more play. It’s the last play of the game and it feels like every football movie I have ever watched. The Pirates are chanting “Defense” while the Giants fans are chanting “here we go giants here we go”. Finally the ball is snapped and the giants go for another pass. At this time everyone is completely quiet as we see who will win this game. It felt like slow motion as the ball left the quarterback’s hand and traveled through the air. This wasn’t like the normal football movie where the team you want to win is down then comes back within the last seconds of the game. When the ball was in the air the defender knocked it down and was an incomplete pass. The Pirates ran on the field yelling with joy as the Giants walked off the field with their heads down. None of the Giants players said anything and you see the disappointment and sadness in their eyes.

Even though the Giants didn’t make it to the super bowl it was still a great game. Overall I had an awesome time observing the players, the coaches, and the fans. This team definitely took losing better than my team. When my team lost the playoffs everyone was devastated and most of us including me cried after the game.

Should college athletes be able to accept endorsement deals?

Argument Essay
The NCAA requires that the student athletes be amateurs in their sport. To remain an amateur the athlete can’t be paid, sign a contract with a professional sports organization, have your name on a draft list, use their athletic skills for pay in any form, or play on a professional team.  This means players can’t accept endorsements even though it doesn’t cost the college or NCAA any money. If the NCAA let players accept endorsements it could keep star players at that college for another 2 years because the players wouldn’t be as concerned with going pro because they are already being paid. It doesn’t seem fair to players who help earn their college millions of dollars every year. Since college sports can require as much time as a fulltime job, the players have no time to earn money.
During 2011-2012 the NCAA had annual revenue of 845.9 million (National Collegiate Athletic Association).  After making this much money you would think that they would be more than happy to let the players make a little money.  Letting the players accept endorsements would also help make more money for the NCAA because star players would be less concerned with going pro after two years if they were already being paid. The NCAA traps athletes from poverty. Since a high number of athletes have a chance to play their sport professionally come from a low income family most chose money over and education. Instead of players completing their college education and then going pro, a lot of players from low income families are forced to go pro to support themselves and their families.
Endorsements don’t make the game. They wouldn’t create an unfair advantage for any player or team. This might even make players work harder and strive to get better if they knew they could be offered an endorsement deal. It makes no sense that a star player like Reggie Bush can’t sign a 5 million dollar endorsement with Adidas until he leaves college. So how are these athletes supposed to make money? Student athletes can work but have a limit of only being able to make $2,000 a year. This is not nearly the amount of money needed to support yourself let alone your family.
If an English writes a book there are no restrictions on how much money that individual can make from the sales of their book. Suppose a health student discovers a cure for a disease. That student would receive the profits from it. There shouldn’t be a difference on who can be paid for their work in college and who can’t.
NCAA claims on its website that it is “committed to the best interests, education and athletics participation of student-athletes. Removing the potential income through endorsements only hurts the players. It’s should come to no surprise when star players like Reggie Bush get caught accepting money and gifts that violate the NCAA rules. Many colleges just give scholarships to players just to make the university money. They realize that many college athletes don’t graduate.  More than half the teams that’s made it to the 2006 NCAA men’s basketball team failed to graduate 50% of their players over 6 years. To me it seems that the NCAA doesn’t care about the players they just care how much money they make the NCAA.

The Hardest Job in Football # 7

This article is about how hard it is filming the NFL. This is the toughest job in the NFL because they have make the transition between different shots as smooth as possible. You Don't realize how hard it is until you really think about what they have to do. At any given time they could be watching over 50 screens and planning on which shot they will show next.

Lets start paying college athletes #6

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/lets-start-paying-college-athletes.html?_r=1&ref=magazine&pagewanted=all

This article is about how college athletes should be paid to play. I completely agree because of all the money that they bring in. Thousands of people pay to watch them play and buy their teams merchandise. They also put in as much time into their sport as people do with their full time job.

The Way We Play The Game # 4

This article talkes about the injuries kids get playing sports. During  a typical highschool hockey game Jack Jablonski was paralyzed after being hit into the boards from behide. The parents believed it was all their fault for letting him play. The article also said how much Jacks life changed after the hit. Sports are usually a good thin but every once and awhile something sad like this happens.

Ethnography proposal

For my ethnograhpy essay I am going to observe the lacrosse practice at Raynham Middle school. This is a good place for me to observe because I know the coachs from football and I helped out the coachs for community serive last year. Their pratice field is also very close to my house.I remember how lacrosse practice was and going back is going to remind me how brutal it was. They have hitting, passing, and scoring drills then at the end they do sprints up a slept hill.

This article is about a man named Don Johnson who won 15 million dollars in 3 different casinos. More importantly is that he did it without cheating. He did this by having the casino adjust rules that take some of the advantage away from the house. After the adjustment of the rules don had a 50-50 game against the house.

On observation

If there wasnt a sign that said "Lush ooh la la soap" I would have no idea what was in the picture. The soap were stacked so high that if you knocked 1 over it would probably set off a chain reaction and the next thing you know its all over the ground. You can't tell the size of the room but i would imagine it is very small because of how cluttered it is. It seems like they have soap of every color and scent. I would imagine it smells exactly like a candle store.

Memoir

Jon Hocking
English 101
2/28/12
Memoir
As long as I can remember sports have been very important to me.  It all started when I turned 7 and my dad introduced into tee-ball.  After 1 season of tee-ball I really didn’t want to play any more sports. My parents knew that it was good for me to play so they wanted me to play more sports. The next year my dad got me playing basketball, soccer, and baseball. Even though I didn’t like any of these sports but I continued to play them until I got to middle school. As much as I didn’t enjoy these sports like I wanted to it was still a great experience. After years of trying different sports I finally found I sport that I loved to play. This sport was football and the only reason why I played was because my mother made me play. Was I the best player on the field? Absolutely not, actually I was one of the smallest kids on the team.  This only made me want to become bigger and better at football and was one the best motivators.
When I got to high school the sports I played were football for 3 years, winter/spring track for 3 years, and lacrosse, cross-country, and powerlifting for 1 year. I didn’t play football my freshman year because I thought I was too small and wouldn’t play. I realized that being small was only the start of my problems. The hardest of high school was managing sports, school, and my home life. For the most part I played a sport every season with only a 2 week break between each sport.  High school was a huge step up from middle school and I learned that very fast. When I used to get home from practice I wouldn’t have the energy to study or do homework. This made it almost impossible to get all my school work done.  I knew that in order to be able to keep playing sports I wouldn’t be able to let myself get behind in my school work. To do this I would need to come up with a plan to manage my time.
The most important thing I learned in high school was dealing with sports, home life and school. I learned a lot about how to manage my time so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed with everything. Playing sports in high school made it a lot easier dealing with college and working at the same time because I was used to managing my time.  Everyone says college can be so stressful but I felt almost relieved switching from high school to college because I have more time for school.
The second most important thing that sports taught me was self-discipline. I believe sports help you improve your self-discipline because practices are full of things that you don’t want to do. Even though you don’t always have a coach telling you what to do, sports still build self-discipline because they put you in the state of mind where it doesn’t matter that you don’t want to do something. Instead it makes you realize that in order to be successful you are going to have to do things that you hate.
Even though I love sports and they have taught me a lot I knew that college, sports, and work would be way too much to handle. I would love to play a sport next year when I go to a 4 year school but if I don’t I will still always remember what sports taught me. If I want something bad enough I can accomplish it by working as hard as I can to get it.

Killing chickens

killing chickens

  1. " I tuck her wings tight against her heaving body, crouch over her, and cover her flailing head with my gloved hand."
  2. "My anger and fear center like a tornado on having to kill this hen."
  3. "She fights me, struggling to be free of my weight, my gloved hands, my need to kill her."
The main idea of this article was how she expressed the anger to the chickens of her divorce.

I dont like this authors style of writing because they use to much detail when describing how she killed the chickens. Also I didnt understand how killing chickens is related to divorce.

What Makes a Great Teacher?

What makes a great teacher?

In this article they are discussing what makes a good teacher and all the factors of being a good teacher. This article makes alot of sense to me because I have had teachers who taught me everything and teachers who taught me nothing. There are examples of how they can become better teachers. one thing that I found interesting was asking "does anyone have any questions?" does not work. I found This interesting because in all my classes the teachers always ask that. Most of the time people dont raise their hand but that shouldnt make the teacher a bad teacher because the kid didn't want to ask questions. Its there f

My hometown was a wonderful (or choose your own adjective) place to grow up.
I grew up in the small town of Raynham. My neighborhood was quiet which allowed me to play with my friends without my parents worrying about me.
Laci had a rather crazy style.
She had purple hair that was never done and wore nothing but a lime green shirt that was way to big. No matter how hot it was out she would always wear sweatpants and rain boots.
Mr. Brown is the worst teacher I’ve ever had.
Mr.brown was always my least favorite teacher because instead of teaching he would just scream at us for getting the answer wrong.
The room seemed very distracting.
As I walked into english I knew I wouldn't be able to keep focused with all the posters and windows that made the room very distracting.

Rhetorical analysis

The purpose of this ad is to get people to order UFC 141. The ad makes it seems like it is going to be an exciting fight because they are the 2 biggest fighters in the UFC. It is also a very basic ad stating that the UFC 141 card will be on Friday December 30th and that Brock Lesnar will be fighting Allistair overeem.  This ad really catches your eye because of how intimidating the fighters are.
I see ads like this all the time FX and Spike but they are advertising different fights. Men's health and sports illustrated would be good magazines for this ad because they are the two most popular men’s magazines. Most people who watch UFC are male and in the age group of 18-36. UFC appeals to males in this age group because this is the age group that likes fighting and violence the most. These days it seems like every guy likes to watch people fight.
If I was in charge of the UFC ads I would put more ads out because the only place you typically see them is on the channel Spike. They must be doing something right because the UFC is becoming a huge sport. It has past WWE and is catching up to boxing. This ad is extremely effective for the target audience because on average 620,000 people order each UFC event. They also generate over $465 million in pay-per-view revenue.

autobiography

As long as I can remember I havent liked reading or writing. The only time I read is when I have to for school. This is how most people in highschool and college feel about reading. I don't like reading because the material teachers have me read doesnt interest me that much. Next year hopfully i get more into it when i take classes that actually interest me.Writing on the other hand, I dont mind as much. This is because for writintg assignments the teachers usually let us pick our own topic. This semister I plan on improving my writing as much as posible. When writing I prefer to to type instead of write on paper because I can type faster then I can write.

Attention Whole Foods Shoppers

Attention whole foods shoppers

This article is about the worlds effort to help feed the hungry. the majority (62%) of all undernourished people live in Africa or south Asia. This problem is only getting worse, within the next decade the number of people undernourished will increase by 30%. In Europe and the United States they want to bring improved seeds and fertilizers to traditional farms in Africa and south Asia. Other solutions are introducing wheat and rice into poor countries. In Asia this helped millions of small farmers out of poverty. Even with this help, Africa still has a food crisis. First because Africa's population is growing faster then they are producing food and second because they very rarely use fertilizers.

recess

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/15/education/15recess.html?hpw=&pagewanted=all

This article was about how some school systems felt that recess was a waste of time. Instead kids being able to what ever they wanted the schools made them particpate in games and activities. With this new recess there were alot less problems like fights and injuries. The kids still didnt like it because they enjoyed their own free time.

proposal

The theme I would like to write about is sports. The reason I would like to write about sports is because i have played sports all my life. The sports i have played are soccer, football, track and cross country. I also plan going to a 4 year school next year for athletic training. This is the only theme that really interested me. My 2nd and 3rd choice are crime and justice and family and relationships. The main topic I would discuss is the problem with steroids in all levels of sports. Instead of just discussing steroids in just professional sports i would discuss steroids in highschool, college and professional sports.
