Michigan Stadium is the biggest college football stadium in the entire country. This stadium holds over 100,000 people (20 Biggest American Football Stadiums).  Gillette Stadium only holds 68,000 people (NFL venue info). This picture shows how big the fan base is for some of the top colleges for sports. You can tell by the picture that many people are wearing the Michigan State shirts. The college must make a fortune on just merchandise alone.
Description: Heisman Trophy For Reggie Bush Still Up In Air

Reggie Bush was awarded the Heisman trophy after his 2005 season at USC. He was the first player to have this award be stripped away. While he was playing the NCAA found out that Reggie had accepted 300,000 dollars’ worth of gifts (A simple solution to NCAA corruption). If giving the trophy back wasn’t bad enough for him, he also would not be allowed to play his senior year. I don’t think that this is fair because the NCAA took back the only thing they give to players. Regardless if he accepted money he was still considered the best player in 2005.

The video game company EA sports develop new NCAA video games every year.  The games they make for NCAA are football and basketball. The player on the cover is Robert Griffin who is the quarterback at BU. Even though he is on the cover he won’t receive any compensation for it what so ever. Even though he can chose to not be on the cover it still makes no sense that he doesn’t get paid for it.
Description: http://www.howiteasy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Worst-Sports-Injuries-17.jpg

In just the first week of the 2011 NCAA football season there were over 150 injuries (NCAA injury report). Many of these injuries are bad enough where the athlete wouldn’t be able to keep playing that season. There’s no reason an athlete should risk injury or even death without any form of pay if they can go pro if they are good enough. This is why most players who are talented enough skip their last two years of college and go straight to the pros.

Description: http://coachjaida.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/nick-saban.jpg

Nick Saban is the head coach at The University of Alabama. Not only is he the highest paid NCAA coach but also the 4th highest paid coach at any level including professional. Nick Saban makes over 6 million dollars annually (The Highest-Paid College Football Coaches). Everyone associated with the NCAA is being paid for their work except the players. The good thing that the NCAA is doing is providing the best coaches and staff for the players preparing them for professionals.
Description: Post-Season TV Ad Revenues by Sport [976]

This is a picture comparing the revenues of the NCAA men’s basketball and baseball, football and basketball. These are the three highest paid professional sports. As you can see NCAA men’s basketball makes almost $100 million more than baseball, football and basketball. So why is it that NCAA men’s basketball players have a combined salary of less then just 1 professional athlete in any other sport? This is because somehow the NCAA believes that when players are making money it changes the game.

Dear portfolio reader,

Before taking English 101, I would consider myself a poor writer. Even though in high school I never did badly in my English classes I always had hard time writing. Instead of brainstorming and organizing my ideas I would just start writing. Many times I would move on to the next paragraph before I even finished the one I was working on. When the semester started and I was English 101 I wasn’t confident in my writing. I knew this English class was going to be different. I was determined to improve my writing skills.
During the semester various essays were assigned to build writing skills. The essay that I enjoyed writing most was the ethnography. This assignment was to write about a group by observing them in their “natural habitat”.

Ethnography

Ethnography

The subculture I chose was the Raynham Giants football team. The reason I chose this was because last year my high school required us to do community service. I decided that I wanted to help out with my old football team. I new this would be a good choice because I was very curious about how the players acted during game day. I expected it to be the same as when I played but it’s but I knew it was completely different watching it then actually playing.
Today is game day as Raynham Giants take on their rival the Hull Pirates. The winner of this playoff game will advance to the super bowl.  I arrive at Ryan Bettencourt Memorial Field an hour and a half before the game starts and still have trouble finding a parking spot. It seems like more people are going games then when I played. Walking towards the field all I can smell hotdogs, hamburgers, and fries. Everyone including myself is wearing some kind of Raynham Giants clothing to support their team. There is a two story concrete building with a window facing the field. They use this building to hold equipment, play music and commentate the game. There are two police officers and one paramedic sitting right next to it. On both sides of this concrete structure there are two sets of metal bleachers. These bleachers were much better quality then on the other side of the field. Only the fans of the home team get to sit on the nice metal bleachers. On the other side of the field are the less quality wooden bleachers where the fans of the away team sit. The grass on the field didn’t look as green as it usually does. This was because the old practice field was turned into a new baseball field. This forced all three of the Giants team to practice on the game field. There were a few good sized patches of dirt in the middle of field. The good looking part of the field was the perfectly done lines. The last of the field that I see is the Ryan Bettencourt memorial. This is a 10 by 10 foot fenced in garden with a beautiful memorial stone for Ryan.
I arrived a little bit too early and notice that the teams haven’t really organized themselves yet. All the players are doing their own thing like getting food, playing on the playground, or socializing. It’s an hour before the game and both teams have finally gotten together with their other teammates. The players are wearing their thigh pads, cleats, and their jerseys. I didn’t understand why they did this because without the jerseys on their shoulder pads there were no way of telling whose shoulder pads and helmets were whose. It was like they wanted to mix up their pads to because they all kept them next to one another’s. Both teams were goofing around and just having fun. Thirty five minutes until game time and it was time for the team to start warming up. The coach blew his whistle and all the players started looked for the pads. The coach had them start with a slow lap around the field and then start stretching. They formed 5 lines of about 10 people in each line. The 5 people in the front of the lines were the captains. Stretching lasted 15 minutes and next they individually went over to Ryan’s memorial and took a knee. 20 minutes until game time, the team seemed nervous but focused. No one talked or smiled until 5 minutes before the game when the coach did his game day speech that was so enthusiastic and inspirational that it made me pumped up. It seemed like that nervous butterfly feeling was replaced by motivation. Next both teams line up at each end zone and sit silently for about 30 seconds before the announcers introduced the pirates. They played “Remember the name” by fort minor as the Pirates ran from their end zone to their sideline. Next the announcer introduced the home team and played “Can’t be touched” by Roy Jones Jr. as the Giants ran to their sideline. You could feel the energy of both teams as they are chanting there team names.

With every good play came energetic cheers and clapping and every bad call came angry booing. At half time the Giants were down 21 to 7. They walked slowly with their heads down toward their end zone. Team confidence was low and it was up to the coach to boost it back up. Instead of coach giving an inspirational speech it was the team captain who was the starting quarterback. I didn’t get to hear what he had to say because the coaches didn’t allow anyone near the team but I could tell he did a good job when everyone stood up and started cheering.

Thirty-six seconds left in the game and the Giants are down 28 to 24 when the coach quickly calls a time out. They were on the Pirates ten yard line on 3rd down. They do a pass play that gets knocked down and leaves them with ten yards to go with only one more play. It’s the last play of the game and it feels like every football movie I have ever watched. The Pirates are chanting “Defense” while the Giants fans are chanting “here we go giants here we go”. Finally the ball is snapped and the giants go for another pass. At this time everyone is completely quiet as we see who will win this game. It felt like slow motion as the ball left the quarterback’s hand and traveled through the air. This wasn’t like the normal football movie where the team you want to win is down then comes back within the last seconds of the game. When the ball was in the air the defender knocked it down and was an incomplete pass. The Pirates ran on the field yelling with joy as the Giants walked off the field with their heads down. None of the Giants players said anything and you see the disappointment and sadness in their eyes.

Even though the Giants didn’t make it to the super bowl it was still a great game. Overall I had an awesome time observing the players, the coaches, and the fans. This team definitely took losing better than my team. When my team lost the playoffs everyone was devastated and most of us including me cried after the game.

Should college athletes be able to accept endorsement deals?

Argument Essay
The NCAA requires that the student athletes be amateurs in their sport. To remain an amateur the athlete can’t be paid, sign a contract with a professional sports organization, have your name on a draft list, use their athletic skills for pay in any form, or play on a professional team.  This means players can’t accept endorsements even though it doesn’t cost the college or NCAA any money. If the NCAA let players accept endorsements it could keep star players at that college for another 2 years because the players wouldn’t be as concerned with going pro because they are already being paid. It doesn’t seem fair to players who help earn their college millions of dollars every year. Since college sports can require as much time as a fulltime job, the players have no time to earn money.
During 2011-2012 the NCAA had annual revenue of 845.9 million (National Collegiate Athletic Association).  After making this much money you would think that they would be more than happy to let the players make a little money.  Letting the players accept endorsements would also help make more money for the NCAA because star players would be less concerned with going pro after two years if they were already being paid. The NCAA traps athletes from poverty. Since a high number of athletes have a chance to play their sport professionally come from a low income family most chose money over and education. Instead of players completing their college education and then going pro, a lot of players from low income families are forced to go pro to support themselves and their families.
Endorsements don’t make the game. They wouldn’t create an unfair advantage for any player or team. This might even make players work harder and strive to get better if they knew they could be offered an endorsement deal. It makes no sense that a star player like Reggie Bush can’t sign a 5 million dollar endorsement with Adidas until he leaves college. So how are these athletes supposed to make money? Student athletes can work but have a limit of only being able to make $2,000 a year. This is not nearly the amount of money needed to support yourself let alone your family.
If an English writes a book there are no restrictions on how much money that individual can make from the sales of their book. Suppose a health student discovers a cure for a disease. That student would receive the profits from it. There shouldn’t be a difference on who can be paid for their work in college and who can’t.
NCAA claims on its website that it is “committed to the best interests, education and athletics participation of student-athletes. Removing the potential income through endorsements only hurts the players. It’s should come to no surprise when star players like Reggie Bush get caught accepting money and gifts that violate the NCAA rules. Many colleges just give scholarships to players just to make the university money. They realize that many college athletes don’t graduate.  More than half the teams that’s made it to the 2006 NCAA men’s basketball team failed to graduate 50% of their players over 6 years. To me it seems that the NCAA doesn’t care about the players they just care how much money they make the NCAA.

The Hardest Job in Football # 7

http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theatlantic.com%2Fmagazine%2Farchive%2F2009%2F01%2Fthe-hardest-job-in-football%2F7212%2F%3Fsingle_page%3Dtrue?tab=people&uname=hapappas

This article is about how hard it is filming the NFL. This is the toughest job in the NFL because they have make the transition between different shots as smooth as possible. You Don't realize how hard it is until you really think about what they have to do. At any given time they could be watching over 50 screens and planning on which shot they will show next.

Lets start paying college athletes #6

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/lets-start-paying-college-athletes.html?_r=1&ref=magazine&pagewanted=all

This article is about how college athletes should be paid to play. I completely agree because of all the money that they bring in. Thousands of people pay to watch them play and buy their teams merchandise. They also put in as much time into their sport as people do with their full time job.

The NFL's Bad Boys journal # 5

http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fbyliner.com%2Fspotlights%2Fthe-nfls-bad-boys?tab=people&uname=hapappas

He went from s 3rd stringer to franchise player very quick in his first season back. This article also talks about Ben Roethlisberger being charged with sexual assualt in the off-season. He took fame back in the city by throwing a few touchdown passes according to this article. The last athlete this article talks about is O.J. Simpson.
